Keys for Effectively Communicating with Your Children

Make talking a part of the daily routine

Be intentional about creating opportunities to connect with your children through meaningful daily conversations.  Make plans to spend time talking with your children on a consistent basis. Setting aside time to talk with your child indicates to them how important and how much you value these moments each day.  After school, during meals, limiting video games or watching television, and before bedtime, are all favorable possibilities.   Building this communication connection will help to offset the occasional instance when your talk needs to be canceled, or when busy schedules or crises may use up available talk time.    Developing a habit of spending time together in this way creates an expectation for the child, who will hopefully anticipate your time together, as well as build their trust, and dependence on you as their confidant.  Making it easier for them to bring up difficult subjects to discuss with you.
